Kali Dogwear,
Sustainable Solution for your Pet
Did you know that making mindful choices for your pet’s wardrobe not only ensures that your furry friends look and feel their best, but also supports a more sustainable planet?
Kali Dogwear, a Bali based company, has taken a proactive stance to address environmental and animal welfare issues whilst revolutionising the pet industry. The journey began when founder Annika Brandt rescued a dog named Kali from a river in Bali, which ultimately inspired the company’s name and logo. Annika, who adopted an eco-friendly lifestyle, is aware of Indonesia’s pollution problem and wanted the same eco-friendly lifestyle for her canine companion. This prompted her quest in finding a sustainable and durable dog collar for Kali.
Despite the increasing awareness of eco-friendliness driven by rapid climate change, the extension of this eco-conscious mindset to pets' lifestyles is often overlooked. While specific data on Indonesia's and Australia's pet industry is unavailable, recent research in the United States has exposed a concerning reality. The North American pet industry alone produces up to 300 million tons of plastic annually. From plastic food packaging to Styrofoam-filled dog beds and short-lived plastic collars, pet owners unintentionally contribute to environmental degradation, undermining their genuine intentions of prioritising animal welfare.
Annika’s search for a long-lasting and sustainable dog collar proved futile. Determined to make a change, she started by purchasing recycled T-shirt yarns from Java and metal buckles instead of plastic ones, and embarked on creating her sustainable dog collar. After several iterations, Annika sought out the help of a local seamstress who introduced the use of coconut yarn. The positive feedback from friends who admired the collars and requested their own, ignited the spark to start her business - Kali Dogwear.
Today, Kali Dogwear produces an array of dog accessories by incorporating eco-friendly materials. Their top-selling dog beds, filled with coconut yarn, not only offer a gentle environmental footprint but also provide comfort for pets. Pet owners appreciate them for their appealing and sustainable design.
Kali Dogwear prioritises ethical production practices. It contributes 20% of the company’s profits to local rescue shelters who are beyond their capacities and struggling to fulfil their rescue aims due to limited funding. Currently there are up to 500,000 homeless dogs prowling the streets in Bali, posing challenges to public health and animal welfare. Kali Dogwear tries to assist the rescues, who are relying on inconsistent donations to sustain their voluntary work.
Their in-house production ensures highest product quality, price stability, production flexibility and most crucially, fair wages for their tailors. Each item is handmade, ensuring the highest quality for your money. The company also collaborates with local businesses such as Plastik Kembali, which pays locals to collect waste from public landmarks, recycling it and transforming it into new products.
Why not let your pets make a statement while championing sustainability? These unique creations demonstrate that pet owners can contribute to both the environment and animal welfare by making mindful choices. Choosing Kali dogwear ensures your pet stays fashionably on-trend while embracing eco-friendliness and philanthropy.
