No-Waste Music Festivals towards A World Without Plastic Pollution
Evo & Co. - Jelly Cups

Are you concerned about the waste produced at our festivals? Turns out, 50 percent of waste generated comes from the campsites themselves, at an estimated 6 pounds of waste per person per day. On top of that, only around 32% is recycled, meaning our partying efforts result in a significant contribution to greater landfill. But what if there was a solution that not only addresses the waste issue but benefits the environment at the same time?

Meet Evo and Co, founded in 2016 by David Christian, their mission is to create a world without plastic pollution. They do this by offering a range of sustainable alternatives to single-use plastic products as well as creating a number of movements to raise awareness. With an ambition to mimic nature and create a circular economy, Evo and Co only use natural or renewable resources that can be re-planted again such as seaweed food wrapping, seaweed coffee sachets, sugarcane container, areca leaf packaging and rice straws.  They also create products that are intended for multiple uses, however, can also be composted, recycled, or upcycled.

With their passion to challenge our existing culture of consumption and ‘disposability’, Evo and Co acknowledge that this model relies on the function of the linear economy where our relationship with resources is just about extraction. However, if we can change our relationship with the planet as individuals, and commit to sustainability, we can begin to create an economy that is in harmony with the planet.

One of their greatest innovations yet, has utilised the abundant resource of seaweed through sustainable farming practices to provide the people with 100% vegan friendly edible cups – the Ello Jello. Made entirely from seaweed and other plant-based materials, this cup is not only a saviour to the environment, but it is also great for your body as it's rich in vitamins and minerals! What’s more, if you’re not feeling exactly peckish and only in need of a drink, the cup can be composted in any setting as it biodegrades within 30 days. So, if we were to have these jello geniuses on offer at a festival, we could firsthand eradicate the waste problem by virtue of doing what we do, but better – drinking out of jello!

If such an initiative were to be collaborated in the Australian festival scene, patrons could be incentivised to recycle their butts for a reward or a free drink in the jello to further inspire conscious consumption and environmental responsibility by making sustainability fun. It is all in the power of the consumer and if we start directing our bargaining power to the companies that are working to make an impact, then we can tackle our waste problem together as a unified world.
